Description
The Crest of Arms of the City of Rotterdam. This was granted by Willem I, Count of Holland and Hainaut in the fourteenth century. It consists of an escutcheon (shield) with a green band (the original weapon of Weena), bisected by a grey band which symbolizes the river Rotte. Two golden lions support the shield while on a golden field rest four lions, two red, Dutch ones and two black, Hainaut ones. The motto is: Sterker Door Strijd - Stronger Through Effort. It was added in 1948 by Queen Wilhelmina to honor Rotterdam's heroics during WW II. Rotterdam received its city rights from Count of Holland Jan 1 in the year 1299.
