Description
This object represents one half of a gold shoulder clasp. It was unearthed in 1939 in East-Anglia, together with many other treasures. The objects were contained within a wooden boat and were presumably the possessions of an Anglo-Saxon king or chieftain. The hoard may have functioned as a memorial rather than a burial because no skeleton was present. The cloisonne jewelry pieces were most likely fashioned by an Anglo-Saxon goldsmith. They are made of gold filigree and inlaid with garnets and red glass. The workmanship of this piece (and the others) is truly superb.
