Description
A series of ancient Greek statues known as Caryatids are displayed in the Greek National Museum. Each statue is sculpted to appear as though it is holding up an architectural element above its head. They were originally holding up the ceiling of the small Nike temple which is attached to the Erechteion. They were removed and replaced with modern replicas as soon as it became clear that vandals were slowly destroying the sculptures.
