Description
Beautiful old building in Hoorn, a centuries' old city in Noord Holland, one of the westernmost provinces in the Netherlands. During the middle ages, Hoorn was an important trade city thanks to its proximity to both Scotland and Germany. Scotland was just across the North Sea while Germany was easily reached via the many waterways in the Netherlands. It also played an important role in the leadership of the VOC (Dutch East India Company) and several foreign parts have been named after the city, specifically the Hoorn Islands and Cape Horn in South Africa. In the year 1357, Hoorn was granted city rights by Willem V, Count of Holland.
